HR Generalist

SUMMARY
The Human Resources Generalist works collaboratively with employees, students, and the public by providing leadership and guidance in employee and labor relations, payroll, classification, and benefits administration.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Partners with employees, students, and the public as their primary human resource contact at the college.
  • Coordinates employee onboarding, including completion of new hire paperwork and orientation to the college.
  • Monitors employees’ time by validation of data and supervisor authorizations. Ensures compliance with FLSA regulations and collective bargaining agreements. Performs accurate data input into the payroll and human resources information system (HRIS) to oversee timecards, leaves, and benefits for payroll. 
  • Manages the College’s workers’ compensation, unemployment, and Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) programs.
  • Coordinates the campus professional development program, assists with union negotiations, special projects, and other initiatives.
  • Assists in the interpretation and application of federal or state laws. Performs accurate record keeping, reporting, and audits for compliance with state and federal legal regulations such as, but not limited to, the Affordable Care Act, Office of Civil Rights, Department of Labor, Montana University System, and public retirement systems.
  • Actively participates in the development of a climate that promotes and supports innovation and efforts to continuously improve services to students, faculty, and the College.
  • Establishes and initiates effective and timely communications for employees and supervisors to assure sharing of human resources information.
  • Maintains department’s supplies, expenses, purchases and budget.
  • Prepares and edits correspondence and forms including announcements, communications and human resources website and timekeeping system; prepares reports, charts, and statistics in support of human resource operations and studies.
  • Remains current in practices, trends and research related to areas of assignment.
  • Attends related trainings, workshops, and professional development.
  • Cross trains to perform other departmental and team functions; backfills for staff as needed.
  • Creates and maintains a collaborative and collegial environment and maintains effective working relationships.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Reports to the Executive Director of Human Resources.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field, OR
  • Associate’s degree in related field AND two years of related work experience, OR
  • An equitable combination of four years of higher education AND/OR related work experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Human Resources professional certification
  • Human Resources work experience in educational environment or public organization
  • Work experience directly related to monitoring and compliance, benefits, and delivering quality customer service to employees, organization, and the public
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of principles, practices and standards of human resource administration
  • Knowledge of applicable state and federal regulations
  • Skill in taking initiative, being proactive, critical thinking, problem analysis and resolution
  • Strong project and time management skills; highly organized, accurate and detail-oriented
  • Skill and ability to operate current technology including knowledge of human resource information systems and technology
  • Ability to work within policies and procedures of FVCC                 
  • Ability and willingness to serve as an ambassador for the College by interacting appropriately with the college community and community
  • Ability to maintain effective and positive professional relationships            
  • Ability to follow and issue directions                                    
  • Demonstrated communication, technology, presentation, customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds  
  • Ability to intermittently work non-traditional schedules including evenings, weekends, etc.         
  • Ability to maintain regular and acceptable attendance levels                       
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality                                     
  • Ability to successfully pass a criminal background check                
  • Ability to respond in the event of an emergency       
  • This is a Medium Duty job, according to the Selected Characteristics of Occupations Defined in the Revised Dictionary of Occupational Titles, U.S. Department of Labor and Industry.    Medium Duty involves exertion of 20-50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10-25 pounds frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds continuously to move objects.
